May 29 (UPI) — The remains of a World War II airman killed in a twist of fate 8 decades ago will be buried in his Illinois Chester five days after Memorial Day.
Howie’s remains were known after the end of the war and were buried in the heroes segment of the Civil and Military Cemetery of Bolovan, Ploiesti, Prahova, Romania.
In 2017, the DPAA unearthed unknown individuals suspected of being related to the missing airmen in Operation TIDAL WAVE. These remains were sent to a laboratory at Nebraska Air Force Base for dental and anthropological identity examination and analysis, as well as DNA testing. Howie’s remains were definitively known in August 2022.
Howie’s call can be found, along with that of other missing World War II veterans, on missing tablets at Florence American Cemetery, a building of the U. S. Battle Monuments Commission. USA in Impruneta, Italy.
Now that Howie has met and returned home, a rosette will be placed next to his name.
