Wheels to close jet engine parts plant in Virginia

The Rolls-Royce Crosspointe plant in Prince Georges County, Virginia, is expected to close until mid-2021 due to weakening demand for advertising aircraft caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The plant consists of two operations, one rotary disc generation and one turbine blade and nozzle steering blades operation device.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a historic civil aviation collapse, which will take several years to recover. As a result, we have had to make complicated but mandatory decisions for the long term of our business,” Rolls-Royce North America’s spokesman Don Campbell said in a statement.

The closure will be 280 workers, although those losses will remain at 120 jobs announced in a reduction effort in June.

The pandemic was a strong relief in the activity of advertising aircraft, which reduced airline service requirements. However, airlines also canceled many orders for new Boeing commercial aircraft and Airbus SE aircraft, reducing the need for new dual-flow engines to force those aircraft.

In May, Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc announced plans to eliminate at least 9,000 jobs from its global workforce of 52,000 to address the “covid-19 medium-term effect.” However, the manufacturer of aircraft turbine systems and commercial force has been looking to slow down its organization for two years. In June 2018, Rolls began an effort to streamline its production operations and reduce the complexity of its aid and control functions. The new effort aims to meet the lowest call point of the roll source markets.

“Due to significant relief in requesting our civilian products and services, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we no longer have the workload to assist on-site operations. In an attempt to stop additional layoffs [at the company] and retain as many workers as possible, we have taken swift and decisive steps to reduce expenses,” Campbell said of the Virginia plant. “However, the severe economic effect affecting Covid-19 has made the closure of our Crosspointe facility inevitable.”
