Australian mining company Fortescue has taken a big step forward to replace mining shipping with the arrival of its prototype Liebherr hydrogen transport truck.
The Liebherr T 264 transport truck, dubbed “Europa”, travelled 1,100 kilometres from Perth to the Pilbara, where it will now be installed in an authentic mining environment at Christmas Creek.
Once operational on site, Europa will be refueled with liquid hydrogen from the Green Energy Hub at Fortescue, also at Christmas Creek.
Fortescue Metals CEO Dino Otranto sees the combination of the hydrogen-powered Europa with its battery-electric equivalent, the Roadrunner, as a “game-changer” for the company.
“This builds on our broader collaboration with Liebherr, where we worked together to expand and validate a fully incorporated autonomous transportation solution, which we aim to be the first to run on zero-emission cars in the world,” OtrantoArray said.
“To decarbonize mining, a solution formula is needed. This new operating formula that integrates a fleet control and power control formula will be a game-changer in reducing our carbon emissions.
“Europe integrates a Fortescue Zero battery into a Liebherr transport truck for the first time, which marks a milestone in our partnership with Liebherr.
“Over the next five years, we will work with Liebherr to expand a fleet of zero-emission transport trucks, which will be deployed at our facility from 2026.
“It’s to see our prototype hydrogen-powered transport truck enrolled in its battery-electric equivalent, the Roadrunner, on site. »
Oliver Weiss, Executive Vice President of the R
“What we learn from this hybrid truck will particularly influence our long-term advancement methods for emission-free transport,” says Weiss.
“It’s about seeing how this cooperation is helping to drive our planned advancements of new technologies, from concepts to demonstration and exploitation in the field. “
Roadrunner was active in August 2023 and, as of March of this year, had completed its first phase of testing.
