When Volkswagen admitted in September 2015 that it had intentionally falsified US emissions regulations, a global automotive scandal erupted with implications around the world.
The challenge affected the EA189 engines used by the Volkswagen Group. The cars involved are supplied with either a 1. 6-litre or 2. 0-litre EU5 diesel engine produced between 2012 and 2015. EA111 engines were also affected.
In the United Kingdom, around 1. 2 million Volkswagen Group vehicles and advertising vehicles received these fraudulent devices, affecting brands such as Audi, SEAT and Skoda.
In October 2015, Volkswagen announced an “action plan” to recall those affected by the VW emissions scandal.
The cars are supplied with either a 1. 6-litre or 2. 0-litre EU5 diesel engine manufactured between 2012 and 2015.
The EA111 Volkswagen Polo 1. 2 TDI, SEAT Ibiza 1. 2 TDI and Skoda Fabia 1. 2 TDI models are affected.
The list of models supplied with EA189 diesel engine includes:
Around 1. 2 million Volkswagen cars and cars have been recalled in the United Kingdom following the EA189 diesel engine emissions scandal.
It is decomposed as follows:
Volkswagen passengers: 508,276
Audi: 393,450
SEAT – 76,773
Skoda: 131,569
Volkswagen application cars: 79,838
Almost a proportion of all Audi diesel cars on UK roads at the time were affected by the emissions scandal and were recalled for modifications.
Of the 1. 2 million cars recalled through Volkswagen brands in the United Kingdom, Audi accounted for around 400,000 cars. This means that 45% of all Audi diesel cars on the road were affected.
The cars are supplied with the old EA189 EU5 2. 0 TDI diesel engine produced between 2012 and 2015.
Likewise, a huge proportion of Volkswagen and Skoda cars were affected: 37% of all diesel cars on the road from those two brands were recalled. Volkswagen forced more than 500,000 cars to be modified. The scandal also affected 25% of SEAT diesel cars that circulate on the roads of the United Kingdom.
Volkswagen’s recall strategy for EA189 engines in 2016 affected 11 million cars and began in January 2016. VW said it would take 12 months.
After the EA189 engine recall, we have received several reports of problems encountered by owners with their cars. These come with lower fuel economy, loss of power, and knocking noises at low revs.
However, given the number of recalled cars, we only got a handful of complaints. The problems appear to be basically due to 2. 0 TDI 140 BlueMotion DSG cars after 2010. VW dealers said they would provide a software fix to fix the problem.
In October 2015, the government announced that owners of EA189 and EA111 would face any car tax increase (or VED, as it is also known).
Transportation Secretary Patrick McLoughlin later said, “Our priority is to protect the public and give them complete confidence in diesel testing. The Government expects Volkswagen to hand over to the owners of the cars they have already bought in the United Kingdom and we are playing our part to make sure that no one does. end higher taxes as a result of this scandal.
We are also starting our programme to get to the end of the Volkswagen car situation in the United Kingdom and understand the wider implications for other types of cars to provide safety for all consumers. “
“I have insisted that action be taken in the EU to conduct emissions testing and I will continue to do so. I have also called for an EU-wide investigation into the use of ‘defeat devices’, alongside the work we are doing in the United Kingdom. “
In October 2015, Volkswagen showed that when reading the first versions of EA288 diesel engines, they encountered polluting emissions.
Until now, the EA198 engines – in the 1. 6 and 2. 0 liter EU5 versions – and the EA111 engines were affected.
In a brief statement, VW said it is investigating whether the software could also be included in earlier versions of its new EA288 diesel engine.
However, a few weeks later, Volkswagen published a saying: “After careful review, it has now been shown that no software is installed in cars equipped with EA288 EU5 engines, which constitutes an inappropriate defeat device, as explained by law. “
