From supercars to electric sedans to vans, a total of cars are made in Britain.
The British automotive manufacturing sector had a bumper year in 2023, with more than a million made across the UK.
This includes 905,117 cars and 120,357 advertising vehicles, with total production up to 17% through 2022, with a particularly strong end to the year.
Production of hybrid and electric cars also increased by 48 percent, with only about 350,000 of these types of cars. But which cars are made in the UK and where?Let’s take a look.
Aston Martin is known around the world for being a British sports car manufacturer and all of its car diversity is made entirely in the UK. It operates two factories, one in St Athan, South Wales, where the DBX is built, and its main factory. in Gaydon, Warwickshire, which makes cars such as the Vantage and the new DB12 sports cars.
Bentley produces all of its cars in an impressive factory in Crewe, Cheshire, and its diversity is joined by the Continental GT, the Flying Spur and the Bentayga SUV. The latter accounts for 44% of its total production. Bentley built 12,859 cars here in the UK last year. .
Although Jaguar sales have plummeted in recent years, most of the cars that are made are still made here in the UK. It produces its popular F-Pace in Solihull alongside the Range Rovers, while the XE and XF sedans, as well as the F-type sport, are made in Castle Bromwich.
Land Rover accounted for the bulk of JLR’s total production of 238,422 cars in 2023 and, along with Jaguar, is Britain’s second-largest car producer. Land Rover manufactures the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar in Solihull, while its smaller Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque models are made in Halewood, Merseyside. Only the Defender and Discovery are manufactured outside the UK, in Slovakia.
The London Electric Vehicle Company may not be as well-known as the others on this list, but you probably recognize the electrified London black cab that this company produces. It also manufactures an electric van known as the VN5, either at a site near Coventry. .
Although Lotus is making the most of its cars outside the UK (its new Eletre SUV and Emeya sedan are made in China), it continues to produce its sports cars here in Britain. The Emira was built in Hethel, Norfolk.
McLaren has established itself as a serious competitor to supercars in recent years, and it shows just how varied British car brands can be. All McLarens are built in a factory in Woking, Surrey, with the addition of the 750S and Artura.
Mini’s factory in Cowley, Oxford, continues to produce a large volume of its cars and last year made 184,996 vehicles, a slight reduction from last year. Mini produced its standout Hatch there in 2023 and last year phased out production of the Clubman. He’ll soon be preparing to build his new three-door Cooper hatchback.
Morgan is one of the UK’s smallest car manufacturers, but it demonstrates a point of craftsmanship and individuality that is lost in mass production facilities. It has a base in Malvern, Worcestershire, which manufactures its diversity of sports cars.
Nissan is the UK’s largest carmaker, with 324,893 new cars produced at its Sunderland plant in 2023, spread across three vehicles: its Qashqai and Juke crossovers, as well as the Leaf electric sedan. The Qashqai makes up the largest component of its workforce.
Rolls-Royce is famous for its luxury cars and continues to lead the way in customization and craftsmanship. It has a site near Chichester, West Sussex, where all of its cars are made. Rolls-Royce also began construction of its first electric car, the Spectre, last year.
Suzuki is a car company that many don’t know produces a car in the UK, it’s actually a rebranded Toyota. Known as the Swace, it is a hybrid truck based on the Corolla and manufactured at a factory in Burnaston, near Derby. .
Stellantis includes such a broad range of brands that it’s easier to include in one section. The firm produces vans for Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and Vauxhall at two sites in the UK – one in Luton, and a second in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
While Toyota is already known, it’s the company’s “clean” Corolla that accounts for the bulk of production at the Derbyshire plant. The company made 122,193 models there in 2023, adding the sedan and estate versions of the Corolla.
