Automotive expert Mike Caudill explains the insights that show consumers are not yet in a position to fully transition to electric vehicles.
German automaker Porsche on Tuesday unveiled the new 911 Carrera GTS, the first street-legal 911 to use a hybrid powertrain.
The hybrid sports car features a lightweight T-Hybrid formula with a new electric exhaust fuel turbocharger, designed on the basis of racing technology.
The built-in electric motor, located between the compressor and the turbine wheel, raises the turbocharger and creates additional pressure, while also functioning as a generator that can produce up to 11 kW of force drawn from the exhaust fuel flow.

“We have evolved and tested a wide variety of concepts and approaches to achieve the hybrid formula that would have the best compatibility for the 911,” Frank Moser, Porsche’s vice president for the 911 and 718 styling lines, said in a statement. “The result is an exclusive transmission that fits into the overall concept of the 911 and particularly improves its performance. “

Its boxer engine delivers 485 horsepower even without electric assistance. In total, the power of the system is 541 horsepower, 61 horsepower more than its predecessor, which allows it to surpass its predecessor by one hundred kilometers per hour.
“This efficient, high-performance hybrid achieves very dynamic driving characteristics and at the same time reduces CO2 emissions with a particularly lower weight than plug-in hybrid vehicles,” Porsche wrote in the statement.

The new 911 includes a fully virtual tool group for the first time. The company claims that the 12. 6-inch display can be extensively custom-designed and offers up to seven views, adding an exclusive classic display powered by Porsche’s classic five-tube dial design with an intermediate tachometer.
