On Thursday morning, NASA will launch its fifth rover on Mars: an SUV-sized clinical robot.
The $2.4 billion nuclear propulsion vehicle, called Perseverance (or “Percy” for short) is designed to move along the Martian surface, look for symptoms of ancient life, capture videos and sounds, and collect rocks and floor samples for a long-lasting rocket.ride on Earth.
In preparation for long-term human landings on Mars, the rover will also bring an experimental device that converts carbon dioxide from the planet’s thin environment into oxygen and even check samples of possible area suits to see how resistant they are to the Martian punitive environment.
And if that were not enough, in the abdomen of the rover is a drone called Ingenuity, which if it works would be the first vehicle to make a motorized flight to the world.
Perseverance is scheduled for release Thursday at 7:50 a.m.ET on Thursday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on an Atlas V rocket built through the United Launch Alliance.

The takeoff will mark the third project to Mars to begin this month and follow the launch of the United Arab Emirates’ Hope spacecraft, which aims to orbit Mars to map its climate around Mars.a rover on Mars that will use a radar to search for an underground water wallet and also put a spacecraft in orbit into the mars atmosphere.
All launches were planned very close to reach a critical window into Mars’ orbit: the era in which its trajectory fully aligns with That of Earth.This window arrives in February 2021, when ships are expected to reach Mars.Fuel and weight restrictions, without the possibility of releasing it now, would have forced area agencies to wait until 2022.
Perseverance is expected to land on Mars’ Jezero crater (below) on February 18 and will record, for the first time, its heartbreaking descent to the surface that NASA calls the “seven minutes of terror,” so named for the time engineers will have to wait to verify a successful landing.
The Jezero crater, once flooded with water, was decided after five years of careful examination through planetary scientists, because its rock and clay have the possibility of involving electrochemical signatures from past lives.
The same features that make the Jezero crater exciting to examine make it a tricky position to land a rover: the varied terrain is full of holes, ridges and rocks.But engineers have advanced contact technology, adding the progression of more exactly timed landing parachutes since the arrival of NASA’s latest rover, Curiosity, to Mars in 2012 More recently, the company effectively launched its InSight lander on Mars in November 2018.
If all goes well, Perseverance will be the rover’s fifth project to Mars controlled through NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as the rover’s fifth successful landing on Mars (unless China lands first). Another Mars rover called Rosalind Franklin, a collaboration between the European Space Agency and Russia’s Roscosmos, is expected to be introduced in 2022.
