At least 15 passengers were killed and 60 others injured after three rear carriages of the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express derailed on Monday morning when they collided with a cargo exercise in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district. A few hours after the incident, the Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnav was seen riding his motorcycle to the scene of the accident. Railway officials said the death toll may also rise as several state and central agencies were on a war footing with the local population to rescue passengers who were possibly still trapped inside. Among the deceased are the pilot and co-pilot of the loading exercise, as well as the caretaker of the passenger exercise.
The incident caused panic among passersby.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Monday held in-depth talks with his US counterpart Jake Sullivan, the main focus of which was the implementation of the ambitious Indo-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).
