GOSTEBORG, Sweden, Oct. 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — In 2025, Volvo Group’s truck plant in Ghent, Belgium, will start producing battery modules. To date, the partners supply mobiles and modules to the Group. The resolution to invest in installing battery module production capacity in Ghent is another vital step for the Volvo Group to shape its long-term price chain for battery systems. The battery module production line in Ghent will use battery mobiles from any of the partners and the mobile battery factory in Sweden.

“We have introduced the investment procedure to identify the manufacture of battery modules in Ghent. Construction is expected to be 12,000 m2 and at the Volvo Group production site. The new high-tech module factory will consist of an almost completely automated procedure with robots This means that workers with the mandatory skills will be hired, either externally or depending on our internal skills,” says Jens Holtinger, Executive Vice President Group Trucks Operations. The investment framework for this first level of module production is 75 million euros.

Volvo Group’s truck assembly plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, already manufactures heavy-duty electric trucks as the world’s leading manufacturer. In the current part of 2023, the Ghent plant will also start generating battery-electric heavy-duty trucks. The batteries needed to force these electric cars to be manufactured at the Ghent factory. The Volvo Group’s ambition is for at least 35% of cars sold internationally to be electric by 2030.
