Volkswagen Poznań: Expansion of plant for new Caddy on the home straight

The expansion of the Pozna plant took more than two years: the arrangements for all production of the new Caddy are now almost complete. Changes to the renovation included the structure of a logistics room, the expansion of the frame store, and the reconfiguration of the plant site.

Dietmar Mnich, chairman of the Volkswagen Pozna Board and director of the Pozna plant: “We have made about 90% of the capital investment to prepare the plant for the production of Lacheck vehicle models, especially the new Caddy. First cars to verify that production processes are operating lately at new facilities. We plan to start full production in September, then gradually increase the volume and, however, succeed in full capacity by 2021. »

Integration of the plant site

The first stage of the expansion process was the integration of two parts of the plant site, which had previously been separated by a minor public road. Thanks to a proactive dialogue with the local community it was possible in January 2019 to incorporate Smołdzinowska Road into the factory lands and thus to join together both parts of the plant on one site.

New logistics hall

The next step was the structure of the new logistics room. It grants 46,000 m2 of garage area for Caddy and T6.1 production components: engines, fire resistant components, appearance windows, door molding panels, bulkheads and fuel tanks. Thanks to the early proximity of the production room, up to 260 truck trips consistent with the day between Poznao and the Swarz-dz site will have been shunned in the future.

Body shop expansion: another 14,000 meters and 450 new robots

The biggest monetary and organizational challenge of the last two years has been the expansion of the frame shop. In addition to the lobby, which covers a total of more than 14,000 m2 and has a garage capacity of 200,000 m3, Volkswagen Pozna has also invested mainly in fashion technology: 450 new purpose-capable robots are used in the new Caddy framework. They allow accurate paints and welds of high-strength hot-folded sheets. At the same time, the automation point in the frame shop originally increased from 43% to more than 80%.

New skills

Automation of production processes also leads to complete organizational changes. “Along with technical advances, it is imperative that our workers acquire new skills. Making the framework of the new Caddy require much less manual work. Demands similar to those of installation and machines almost triple. Over the past two years, we have organized more than 1,800 educational sessions for the Pozna plant, which aims to recycle and the best for the team for their new tasks,” says Jolanta Musielak, member of the Executive Committee on Human Resources and Management.
