Viviane Sassen will offer a first retrospective at Foam

The framework of paintings by Dutch photographer and fashion artist Viviane Sassen will be celebrated with her first large-scale retrospective exhibition in Amsterdam at the Foam Museum of Photography.

Viviane Sassen : MATCH : Art

Viviane Sassen is an artist I have followed for many years and is a recurring source of inspiration in my practice, whether it is for her photographs or for the way she chooses to make her art explicit through various mediums, resulting in amazing books and exhibitions, and this retrospective follows the costume.

Having begun his photographic adventure as a fashion photographer, Sassen temporarily gained international recognition for his striking images, visual style, and selection of subjects and approaches. The exhibition will revolve around two ubiquitous themes: “the relentless search for a new photographic bureaucracy and the importance of intimacy in his work. “

Viviane Sassen says: “It is a dream to offer my retrospective in Amsterdam, my hometown, at Foam, where I had my first museum exhibition in 2008. “

The exhibition Sassen references, titled Flamboya and his first museum exhibition, was presented at Foam in 2008. It is one of the next works to be presented in the retrospective, along with the famous projects Umbra (2014) and Parasomnia (2011). Archives viewed, multimedia works, paintings, collages and videos will also be on display, and high-end fashion campaigns for brands such as Louis Vuitton and Dior will be presented in a “monumental installation”.

Also included are Sessen’s early works and experiments in seeking new approaches or mediums, such as early self-portraits. It provides a review of what could simply be an artist’s sketchbook.
