United Rentals Adds Battery Power Systems for Tower Cranes

In partnership with Termaco, United Rentals announced the addition of tower crane battery force formulas to its North American rental fleet as a component of the company’s low- and zero-emission solutions. The formula has evolved to provide the clean, sustainable strength you expect. to enable contractors to monitor fuel consumption and appliance downtime while achieving quieter, low-emission job sites.

According to the announcement, the formula can be configured up to 500 kW and is designed to be powered by a generator to supply reliable power to tower crane operations. Minimizes generator run time by storing power in batteries and running on battery power as much as possible. In applications, the battery can be forced through solar panels to create an absolutely emission-free solution. This allows the contractor to particularly reduce the length of the generator and, in particular, the generator’s run time and emissions, while still meeting maximum force demands.

“Tower crane battery power systems offer a wonderful application of practical sustainability in the workplace by helping contractors meet their economic and environmental goals,” says Larry Worthington, regional vice president of electrical and HVAC for United Rentals. “This solution demonstrates United Rentals’ commitment to bringing cutting-edge products to market that offer an exceptional price to our customers. “

General contractor Award Construction, based in Alberta, Canada, pioneered the use of the battery force formula to completely force an 8-ton, 70-meter-tall tower crane at Riverbank Landing, a planned 20-acre mixed-use network construction in Edmonton. .

As part of the project, Award went from a 300 kVA T4 generator 24 hours a day to force its tower crane to recharge the battery power formula with a 100 kW generator for just two and a half hours a day and operate the crane alone. in the strength of the battery. Generator run time was reduced by 91%, resulting in approximately 80% relief in fuel and emissions.

“The sustainable structure aligns with our company’s core values. We are proud that our Riverbank Landing structure is making history as one of the first in Canada to fully force its tower crane completely through the battery,” says Brian Hennessey, Director of Construction at Award Construction.
