UK car production declines as factories struggle to boost production: SMMT

(RTTNews) – British car production fell by double digits in July as factories struggled to increase production amid a slow recovery in global demand, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Merchants reported Thursday.

Car production fell 20.8 year with 85,696 games in July. Domestic production fell to 37.1% and foreign market production to 16.8%.

The lobby said factories were expanding production, while global coronavirus-related closures were dying and almost all plants were reopening, yet social estrangement measures and persistent economic uncertainty continued to stifl production.

Since the beginning of the year, the effect of the pandemic on key markets, in addition to the UK, means that total production has remained below -39.7%, representing an annual loss of 307,707 cars.

Mike Hawes, SMMT’s executive leader, said the prospect remains deeply uncertain. “With the sector now grappling with an economic recession and a global pandemic, it has neither the time nor the ability to deal with the additional surprise of a Brexit agreement,” Hawes added.
