THE INTERPRETER| Jennifer Coolidge
THE SHOW | The White Lotus
EPISODE | “Arrivederci” (December 11, 2022)
PERFORMANCE | Give us a moment: We mourn the loss of a mythical TV character this week. We were shocked to see Mike White kill Tanya McQuoid, Coolidge’s deliciously nutty socialite, in HBO’s season 2 finale drama, just because she’s been the biggest charm of the afterlife. But at least Coolidge came out in style, giving Tanya a strangely resilient but hopelessly inept swan song.
The finale discovered Tanya in grave danger as she racked up enough clues to realize that her most productive new gay friend, Quentin, was conspiring with her husband Greg to kill her and claim his vast fortune. We were inspired by Tanya’s detective skills, as Coolidge showed us a refreshing strategic aspect of the usually ignorant fool. His line readings were always funny, though: “Those homosexuals! They are looking to kill me!” You’ll live in meme heaven, and we also enjoy the nuggets of physical comedy that Coolidge added. . )
Coolidge was even able to play the role of an action hero, with a sobbing Tanya grabbing a gun and shooting wildly, knocking down her would-be attackers under a hail of gunfire. Quentin dying, “Is Greg having an affair?” (Ha!) However, Tanya met her end when she slipped while trying to get out of the boat and drowned, which was a perfect destination for our silly Tanya. her chance, but Coolidge’s fun and feisty farewell feature gave her a very worthy shipment.
HONORABLE MENTION| Libby, played by Lizzy Caplan, has been an entertaining and insightful storyteller all season long on Hulu’s Fleishman Is in Trouble, but Libby herself is suffering a bit, and Caplan has been wonderful this week, as Libby’s midlife crisis suddenly took her toll. Libby enjoyed the chance to be reunited with her schoolmates, ignoring her husband Adam in the process, and Caplan displaying a biting callousness. she plays a younger, sociable Libby in flashbacks, exploiting the wide-eyed young people the older Libby is so desperate to locate again. explode.
HONORABLE MENTION| The housekeeper’s final moment was an emotionally complicated test, especially for Martha Millan’s Fiona. For two long hours, Millan communicated his fear, determination, uncertainty, resentment and a dozen other feelings as Fiona and Thony ran out of options. which resulted in Fiona’s arrest and eventual deportation. However, the actress shone brighter when the jailed Fiona spoke personally to her son Chris, imploring him not to take her out of the country if she was deported. done, each and every lie I told, each and every toilet I cleaned, is for you,” he told her, and Millan’s voice broke urgently. Here’s the hope that The Cleaning Lady will return for a third season, just like Fiona; We suspect Millan has a much bigger heartache reserved for us.
HONORABLE MENTION| We had high expectations for FX’s Kindred, the first film adaptation of Octavia E’s celebrated novel. Butler and star Mallori Johnson didn’t disappoint as the time-traveling heroine Dana. We were stuck in the opening seconds of Tuesday’s series premiere as Dana lay on the floor, dealing with the excruciating pain of being whipped and then sent back to the present. With virtually no dialogue, Johnson deftly conveyed the frenzied depression and growing frustration Dana felt in that shocking moment, owning the screen as an experienced veterinarian despite it being his first starring role on television. And as Dana stepped back in time on the following scenes, Johnson delivered superbly layered functionality that would make Butler proud.
