TORONTO – Union representatives will meet with the Canadian arms of Detroit’s 3 automakers to begin negotiating wages and benefits over the next 4 years.
The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the job landscape will be a major fear, as Unifor seeks an agreement with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles FCA, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co.
Existing agreements expire on 21 September.
Car sales fell this spring during the peak months of the pandemic, and production lines stagnated when manufacturers closed their factories.
But Unifor’s national president, Jerry Dias, said he will be attentive to any attempt by brands to use COVID-19 as a long-term “excuse,” as the union seeks new product and plant safety commitments in Ontario cities. Of Oakville, Brampton, Windsor and St. Catharines.
Unifor represents approximately 20,000 Canadians from the 3 automakers.
