The area of compact SUVs is in vogue on those days with the Hyundai Crete leading the charts. The mid-range SUV segment, which includes SUVs larger than Crete, has also accelerated since the arrival of the Jeep Compass in 2017. Meanwhile, Toyota, who leads the high-end segment with the Fortuner, I don’t have any SUVs in the area. Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. With strong loyalty to the booming SUV logo and segments, Toyota can gain a lot by introducing more SUVs into its portfolio. These are some of the features Toyota could introduce to the Indian market in the coming years.
This would possibly be an online trend, but if you ask us, second-generation Rush is unlikely to reach India. First of all, it looks like a reinforced minivan and these cars are not the favorite ones here. Specific example: the Honda BR-V. Honda’s SUV looks like the Mobilio minivan now abandoned in more tactics than one. Although it previously gave the impression that Toyota would launch the Rush in India, its frame-over-frame body configuration puts it at a disadvantage compared to monocoque SUVs like the Hyundai Creta in aspects such as fuel power (because it will be heavier), refinement and maneuverability, among others.
While the Rush is almost out of the equation, Toyota still has some attractive features up its sleeve. However, all in the location of its new modular platform, Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), in India.
The TNGA platform debuted with Prius in 2015. Currently, the plug-in hybrid Prius, the eighth generation Camry for India and the C-HR compact SUV are located on this platform. The next generation of Corolla will also be on the TNGA platform. Therefore, expect most of Toyota’s long-term models to be on this platform as well.
Therefore, it would be sensible for Toyota to locate the TNGA platform in India, as this would open the door to more global models that would be brought here at a later stage. Take Volkswagen, for example. The Volkswagen Group has attempted to marry Tata Motors to use Tata Motors’ new modular platform. However, the plan did not materialize for unknown reasons. From now on, its Indian subsidiary would gain new investments to locate the MQB-A0 platform in order to drive long-term market models. Like Toyota’s newest platform, VW’s MQB platform is also modular in nature.
As one of the first products to be founded at TNGA, the C-HR (High-Rider Cup) can also simply be a Hyundai Creta-slayer for Toyota in India. It also has style, substance and a hybrid propulsion system! This might seem too busy for some, but in fact it’s not boring to see. With the C-HR, Toyota has made it clear that it no longer manufactures boring cars for retirees.
Once the TNGA is located, it would be quite simple for Toyota to introduce C-HR into India. It is approximately the same length as the Crete and the line of the diving roof will certainly make it stand out in the segment. In Europe, it runs on a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine or a 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain.
The Toyota FT-AC (Future Toyota Adventure Concept) concept made its world debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. According to the car manufacturer, it is an examined and conceptualized design on an “inspired from the outside” theme. Although Toyota has not officially demonstrated whether the SUV will go into production, the FT-AC is supposed to provide the next-generation RAV4 medium SUV design elements, which are expected to be revealed later this year. And, in fact, the control mule of the RAV4 2019, which was first seen in January 2019, carries design elements of the FT-AC. Like the C-HR, the RAV4 will also be based on the TNGA platform.
Although Toyota has not yet brought the RAV4 badge to the country, the time has come to do so. With the launch of the Jeep Compass, which is the best-selling SUV in this area (up to 2,000 sales per month), the segment has accelerated like never before. Later this year, we’ll see the launch of the Skoda Karoq (replacement of the Yeti) and the fifth-generation Honda CR-V.
