Toyota unveiled a sports edition TRD (Toyota Racing Development) of the Yaris sedan at the 2018 Bangkok Motor Show. The Yaris is expected to launch in India in April 2018 and will compete with sedans such as Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento. This will be the first bid from the Japanese automaker in this segment in India. The Yaris will be located between Etios and Corolla Altis in Toyota’s Indian rank.

Like Toyota’s other TRD models, the Yaris Ativ TRD receives cosmetic additions that give the car a sporty look any mechanical update. At the front, the sedan receives revised instances of fog lights, while the bumper has an extension with a red-liped beak. External mirrors (ORVM) also have a bright black end with red reflections.
At the rear, the Yaris TRD features a prominent boot spoiler. The rear bumper mimics the front with a dual-tone extension and red highlights. Sadly, the alloy wheels remain the same as the bland-looking, multi-spoke units seen on the India-spec Yaris showcased at the Auto Expo 2018. Like the regular Thai-spec model, the TRD version also comes with an all-black cabin with contrasting red highlights. In India, the Yaris will get a dual-tone beige and black cabin.
If you remember, Toyota introduced the TRD Sportivo versions of the Etios sedan and the Liva sedan in 2012. However, they were temporarily abandoned due to low sales. Even the normal versions of the two cars did not appear to be premium offerings in their respective segments. The fact that it has a popular selection among taxi operators has also not helped its cause.
Today, the Fortuner is the only Toyota to gain advantages from the TRD remedy in India and the automaker will likely present the same for the Yaris, perhaps at a later stage. Even Yaris’ rivals will offer more sporty variants such as the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz S, Volkswagen Vento Sport and Skoda Rapid Edition.
The TRD Sportivo edition of the Yaris Ativ costs 25,000 Thai baht (around Rs 52,000) compared to the normal variant on which it is based. If Toyota is presenting it in India, expect the TRD variant to get a similar premium compared to the normal model.

The Toyota Yaris is scheduled for April 24, 2018 and dealers have already started accepting pre-launch bookings for a refundable amount of Rs 50,000.
