Toyota will invest another $2100 million in a battery plant for electric and hybrid vehicles under construction near Greensboro, North Carolina.
The plant will supply batteries to Toyota’s large complex in Georgetown, Kentucky, which will make Toyota’s first U. S. -made electric vehicle. In the US, a new three-row SUV.
The plans, announced Wednesday, will create quick jobs at plants in Kentucky or North Carolina.
Toyota plans to employ 2100 people at the battery plant, which will start production in 2025. The investment will prepare the infrastructure for expansion. This brings the total investment in the Randolph County plant to $5. 9 billion to meet the company’s goal of promoting 1. 8 million electric or hybrid cars in the U. S. Toyota opened the plant in 2021.
The 9 million-square-foot Kentucky complex now employs another 9,500 people who make the Camry sedan, RAV4 hybrid SUV, various engines and other components. The company says work will move to the new electric vehicle when production begins in 2025.
The North Carolina battery plant will have six battery production lines, 4 for gasoline-electric hybrid cars and two for all-electric vehicle batteries, Toyota said in a statement. Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama and Texas.
“With this proactive infrastructure investment, we will be able to temporarily address long-term expansion opportunities to meet the needs of developing visitors,” Sean Suggs, president of Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina, said in a statement.
Toyota Motor Corp. plans to sell 2 million zero-emission battery and hydrogen electric cars worldwide through 2030. In the U. S. , the company plans to sell between 1. 5 and 1. 8 million cars through 2030 that are at least partially electrified.
Toyota’s new chairman, Koji Sato, promised what he called a competitive shift toward the “electrification” of hybrid vehicles.
The company has been criticized by environmental teams for falling into sales of electric vehicles and relying on gasoline-burning hybrids for long-term sales.
Toyota now offers the bZ4X compact electric crossover, built on what’s known as the e-TNGA platform. This stands for “Toyota New Global Architecture” and is also used in its Prius and Lexus models. The electric platform evolved in collaboration with Subaru.
The bZ4X will be available in Japan, the United States and parts of Europe, such as Germany and Britain, as well as China and Thailand.
Toyota also recently announced a new electric car for sale in China, called the bZ3. It will use the evolved generation with Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD Co. in a collaboration that also includes state-owned Tianjin FAW and partners.
