After a year of car racing that saw almost every occasion canceled due to COVID-19, Toyota this year offers racing and competition enthusiasts an opportunity to inspire the action of the TGRA 86 when drivers line up on the grid for the TGRA 86 Series Bathurst Cup. October 15-18.

As a support category for the last circular of the 2020 Supercar Championship on the iconic Mount Panorama circuit, the Bathurst Cup will include 4 25-minute races over the weekend.

Toyota Australia’s marketing director, John Pappas, said the company sought this new opportunity for 2020 for looming professional drivers and weekend warriors who made TGRA 86 series wheel-to-wheel racing action popular with competition and fans.

“With the cancellation of the TGRA 86 2020 series due to COVID-19, we saw an opportunity to showcase ours for emerging drivers and the base motorsport network through holding an exclusive Bathurst Cup,” Pappas said.

“Under the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing brand, we are firmly committed to supporting motorsport at all levels, from our third winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on TS050 to 86 drivers and the TGRA Rally Team here in Australia.

“There is no better position to conclude what has been a difficult year for drivers and motorsport enthusiasts than the non-secular Australian motorsport house in Bathurst.

“And next year, the TGRA 86 series will return to the track as we expect and look to a full season of racing and the progression of tomorrow’s champions,” he said.

With a planned platoon of 20 to 25 cars, drivers will compete for the Bathurst Cup trophy and the glory of taking the checkered flag on one of Australia’s race tracks.

Australian Rally Champion (ARC) Harry Bates will enter the grid competition as a guest driving force on the TGRA 86 before taking part in the only ARC outing of the year to be held in Canberra on November 27 and 29.

Aaron Borg, winner of last year’s Bathurst season and the TGRA 86 series, is also expected to return to protect his title, along with third winner Tim Brook and Kaizen Lachlan Gibbons Award winner as likely starters.
