Remember when Netflix was just a DVD rental service by mail and we thought it was cool to rent videos that were mailed to us?That was in the year 2007, and since Netflix started the streaming revolution here in the United States, there are now more than 200 streamers to choose from.
But what do most people watch on those streaming services? Specifically, what do most Mainers watch on those streaming services?
Gambling site CSGOLuck did some research. I don’t understand why this is still a betting site, especially when you can’t bet online in Maine for sports betting. But I digress.
They analyzed monthly Google searches from January to December 2023 in which TV shows aired last year were the most popular in each state, and broke them down for Maine with those 10 most searched TV shows.
Some takeaways from this Maine-like list:
Here’s the one with the 10:
Black Mirror was powered through the TV series The Twilight Zone, which also tells a full story in each episode, with the difference being that Black Mirror takes place in a dystopia in the near future.
The Crown is a drama series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It isn’t 100% accurate to actual historical events, but it comes pretty close.
There has been a resurgence of hit shows from the ’90s returning to television lately. Night Court, Mad About You, Fuller House, and Roseanne (later The Connors) all get new episodes two decades later. Frasier is the latest to return to Parmount and has been hired for a second season.
Another British import for Netflix, Happy Valley is a crime drama. There were three seasons with a six-year wait between season 2 and the final season.
Party Down is a sitcom that was canceled after two seasons via Starz in 2010, then replaced their minds and brought it back for a third season in 2023. It follows an organization of aspiring actors who apply for a catering company called, of course, “Fête party of the angels. ” The exhibit features a star-studded cast with Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Jane Lynch, and Megan Mullos angeleslly, to name a few.
Beef is a comedy-drama about two strangers whose involvement in a road rage incident turns into a long-running feud. No, it’s not meat. It’s about having a “problem” with someone.
You are a mental mystery in the e-book of the same name. It follows the manager of an e-bookstore and a serial killer who falls in love and develops an excessive obsession. Season 1 aired on Lifetime, and Netflix picked it up for Season 2 in 2023.
Barry is part comedy, part crime drama, and stars Bill Hader as Barry Berkman, a former U.S. Marine from Cleveland who works as a hitman. I just can’t get past Bill Hader playing a hitman.
If you ask me, this was the biggest show to debut in 2023. It’s not very often that a video game is turned into a TV series and has this kind of success. I loved The Last of Us in its post-apocalyptic plot set in Boston, so much that I bought the game and am loving that too. The show follows the plot of the game pretty closely. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are amazing in this show.
I like Harrison Ford, and it’s not like he has a comedic role. Shrinking is a comedy-drama about a grieving therapist who makes the decision to care much more about his patients’ lives. Ford plays the lead therapist in the series.
