“I hope I make the right shot. I hope they don’t shoot me,” said Doug Mills, who has photographed presidents since 1983.

Doug Mills photographed Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Doug Mills, a veteran New York Times photographer who has been taking pictures of presidents since 1983, just yards from former President Donald J. Trump at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when filming beganArray

He spoke with Victor Mather about this experience.

What did you see and hear today?

It is a very classic and typical rally. The former president perhaps an hour late. The crowd had been hot all day. Donald J. Trump arrived, waving to the crowd, as he does at any other rally he holds.

There is an organization of photographers, 4 of us, who were in what we call a buffer zone, a few meters from the former president. We were all running around looking for our general photos.

Suddenly there was what I thought were 3 or 4 loud noises. At first I thought of it as a car. The last thing I thought was that it was a gun.

I continued to take photographs. He came down from the lectern and I thought: “My God, anything happened”.
