Three dozen freight cars derail near Glidden

Union Pacific crews are cleaning up the derailment of an exercise in Carroll County.

A UP spokesman said about 36 rails derailed last night about two miles east of Glidden. No injuries were reported and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Connie Bock, a resident of rural Glodden, says she and her husband have lived about 400 yards from the exercise tracks for more than 40 years. Therefore, they are used to hearing all kinds of noises during exercise, but they are anything else entirely.

“We were just watching the Olympics and we regularly have a lot of semi-trucks and water trailers arriving in the spring. They made a lot of noise, but that noise kept getting louder and louder and louder and then maybe just “I’m sorry in the house,” Bock says. “I passed out and I saw and I ran in and I said, ‘Should I call the police? The exercise failed. ‘”

Bock says the sound of the derailment lasted more than a minute.

“Our dogs started barking and don’t train their brains too much,” he said, “but they barked at that point. “

The derailed wagons were not carrying any hazardous materials, but the Bocks soon realized this, so they were worried.

Union Pacific’s goal now is to get the main line up and running as temporarily as possible. It’s unclear exactly how long this may take, however, UP blocks the lines from working within a few days.
