Among the animal species on the planet, some creatures surprise us, and not because of their size, beauty, or intelligence. On the contrary, these outliers are so bizarre that they make us wonder how – and why – they exist. for example, the lung or the platypus. Well, the Morgan Super 3 is its automotive equivalent.

This vehicle tripod is technically a cycle-car, in the spirit of the first Morgan product of 1910, created for the advantages of British drivers who simply did not want to buy or hire a four-wheeled vehicle. It wasn’t until 1936 that Morgan added a true fourth wheel, but in the meantime his three-wheeled models had earned a forged reputation in motorsport and among the motoring public.

Morgan’s all-electric three-wheeler is a roadster that stays true to its British roots

Morgan’s Speedy New Plus 8 GTR adds even more punch to the model’s old-fashioned roadster look.

Morgan’s first three-wheeler since 1953 launched in 2012. Manufactured until 2018, it was powered by a two-cylinder V-S engine.

Once seated in the cab, the driver and passenger become friends temporarily, as it is far from spacious. We drove the Super 3 Malle Rally Special (priced at $75,660), an edition built in collaboration with Malle London, a manufacturer of motorcycle adventure luggage. apparel and accessories with which the Special is supplied. The car’s beetle-like design, amplified through the Safari Yellow paintwork, drew more attention than most supercars on our tour of the Pacific Coast Highway. In terms of shipping space, the Super 3 has flat panels (called “side blades”) that run around the body, suitable for bulky luggage.

Looking over the short, yellow-tinted windshields, occupants sit crouched and the driver will have to rely on the hood and front fenders as reference points to steer the vehicle. This is a simple roadster. The seats are comfortable but not adjustable, the pedals move to match the maximum driving forces. With no side or maximum sensitive curtains, the style provides unlimited visibility, but the rear exposure can be unsettling for those new to the three-wheeled setup.

The ventilated 3-wheel disc brakes are tenacious and linear in their application, which is reassuring in a small, lightweight vehicle that maneuvers quickly. This handling is what allows for quick steering adjustments on a motorcycle. Acknowledging some sort of kinship, the motorcyclists greeted the Morgan, stating that the 3-wheeler was one of their own. And riding the Super 3 is like riding a well-equipped travel bike, with the added comfort and stability that comes with the semi-enclosed body.

Potholes are things that can’t be ignored in any three-wheeler, as driving them requires being careful to detect unwanted noises. The suspension, while comfortable and not too stiff, can loosen your teeth if a wheel goes over a bump at full speed. And at speeds above 60 mph, the nominal windshields do little to deflect the gust of air, and the driver and passenger are asked to wear goggles or a helmet.

It’s not for everyone, but for those who have hung up their motorcycle jackets in recent years, the Super 3 might be enough of an explanation to get it out of the back of the closet and back into “cycling”.
