The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing has caught the eye since it was first launched in 1954, placing a collection piece on the road. Now, a rare 1955 edition is about to enter the auction block, and it will surely be a crawling grass for car enthusiasts who like to adopt their own restorations.
Launched through Gooding Corporate and Company for its Gearded Online 2020 storefront, this Gullwing, in particular, was built as a special-ordered U.S. export model. The exterior has a vintage firefighter red finish while the interior is covered in dull grey leather. Its chassis is supported by rare and highly coveted Rudge wheels.
In its 65-year history, the automobile passed through five owners, all founded in California, one of whom has been the car commissioner for 40 years. At one point in serendipity, he once belonged to the circle of relatives of an existing Gooding-Company specialist, Garth Hammers, as a child.
“To add rallies and rallies as a child is what solidified the Gullwing as my all-time favorite car,” Hammers told Gooding company in a statement. “My circle of relatives owned this gull wing when I was thirteen and was the only one we had had with Rudge to disassemble wheels. I was still too young to drive at the time, but I was very inspired by this car.
In addition to its original special order prestige and limited edition features, this example is also rare due to its unre restored status. While some may understand this as an inconvenience, it’s a boon for serious collectors. This not only means that the new client will not have to deal with below-average restores beyond; it also means that there is no doubt about the original main points or the color palette of the seagull wing. In addition, the owner can make adjustments much more easily. The auctioneer believes it is possibly one of the last unsortionable seagull wings they are likely to encounter, adding to its already vast value. The value has not yet been published, however, beyond Gullwing (restored) sold through the same auction space amounted to $1.43 million in 2016.
Auctions begin on August 3 and close on August 7. For more information, visit the Gooding and Company online page and see more car photos below:
