Kia used its presentation at the Consumer Electronics Showcase on Monday to reveal its plans to enter the advertising van space, launching three electric advertising van concepts. The logo hopes to launch cars that incorporate interchangeable frame panel modules for deep customization, even allowing for a pickup truck. to an affordable truck.
The concept is simple: the PV1, PV5, and PV7 concepts are actually three electric chassis-cab sizes, all of which can be changed to a wide variety of frame styles by swapping out the modules that hold the cab together. Then, a single taxi can become a pickup truck, an advertising van, a shuttle, an RV, or, as the logo hopes, a self-driving robotaxi.
Some of the mission’s long-term goals are more far-fetched than others, but vans deserve to become a reality sooner rather than later. Kia plans to open a new plant to manufacture those PBV (or “Product Beyond Vehicle”) products with an annual capacity of 150,000 units by 2025. Most likely, it will be the medium-sized PV5 first, then the smaller PV1, and the larger PV7. In a third, more ambitious phase, the logo would integrate module swapping into existing vans employing the integrated motorised locking system range. This third phase would also come with the deployment of a PV5-based robotaxis using our spouse Motional’s SAE Level Four autonomous driving system.
A cab with an electric chassis that can be transferred among other functions opens up a wide diversity of possibilities, but the most exciting thing is perhaps the simplest of all. By simply supplementing the existing cabin with a bed, Kia created a PV5 concept that would be one of the simplest pickup trucks on the market. Hong So Song, Kia’s chief executive, told The Drive that such a pickup could start with a target value of $35,000, which is about $15,000 less than the more affordable Ford F-150 Lightning. It’s just an option for chassis-cab styling and not a definitive product that is sure to be produced, although the option is attractive.
