After a dispute over the reopening of its Fremont, California plant over the pandemic, Musk had threatened to move Tesla’s headquarters elsewhere, adding Texas, where the company already has vehicle progression facilities.
The speed at which the Texas plant will be launched will be strictly monitored, especially after Chinese personnel moved the Gigafactory plant in Shanghai from land production to vehicle production in just under a year, a feat that some consider a restrictive miracle. Texas (and Austin) presented Tesla incentives to block the gigafactory (sometimes also called the terphobic), outperforming Tulsa, Oklahoma and several other suitors. Musk said Tulsa remains a serious candidate for Tesla’s long-term expansion.
Tesla maintains a significant advantage in electric cars, but classic automakers and several start-ups expect to close the hole as economies recover (hopefully) and new electric cars enter the market. BMW recently announced that it will continue with all-electric and electrified (hybrid) cars with the goal of promoting millions of electric and hybrid cars over the next decade.
