Bulletproof cars are generally large, bulky, luxurious, infrequently truck-based cars that can support the thousands of pounds of extra weight required through glass and armor. Most often it’s an armored Chevy Tahoe or an Mercedes S-Class. In what might be the strangest selection possible, this company has made a bulletproof Subaru Crosstrek.
And no, before the folks at Subaru talk about its unreliability, it’s not mechanically bulletproof. This is an armored Subaru Crosstrek made through Armormax, a car that has only 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque and can move slightly without additional weight. It’s also not exactly a heavyweight, as it’s based on the popular Subaru Impreza compact car. On paper, it turns out to be the worst car to assemble.
In practice, this also makes no sense. It’s small, so there’s not much room for all the extra volume that’s needed to put it together. The precise armor solution the car receives is unclear, but the company says it can “stop an Array44 Magnum or an AR-15. “How many times and where is it? It’s not clear, but there’s optional pump protection for the touchdown equipment. The company’s proposal for the vehicle is an armored vehicle that probably won’t break the bank, starting at $50,000.
If the pictures are to be believed, it’s still in the popular tires and suspension. Armouring a car to avoid a bullet or bomb often requires a lot of weight, and the Crosstrek’s shabby strength and architecture make it a truly odd option. Even a high-end Outback would make a lot more sense thanks to its turbo engine. Or a slightly larger SUV with a V6 from some other automaker. Hell, anything would make a ship much more logical than a Crosstrek. No offense, Crosstrek Owners.
