Brazilian bus manufacturer Marcopolo is reaching a milestone, but this has nothing to do with the number of buses on Rio de Janeiro’s roads or even South American sales figures. In just over a year, it will be a decade since the company expanded its global presence to Australia, acquiring a stake in Volgren.

Marcopolo acquired 75% of Volgren in 2012; Since April 2017, it has had one hundred percent of the company and remains the best known in Australian bus circles as its parent company. Marcopolo’s story, however, is much more than that.

The company is one of the largest bus body brands in the world, employs more than 14,300 people in 16 other plants and generates an average production capacity of 240 games per day. At all sites in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Egypt, South Africa, India, China, as well as Brazil and Australia, it produced 15,740 aircraft last year. To put this in context, Volgren has built around 500 buses in 2019, the company said.

Founded in 1949, Marcopolo now has one of the most varied product portfolios, from minibuses to double-decker buses, on roads in more than a hundred countries, he adds.

Marcopolo’s CEO, James Bellini, says that while corporations are of a different size, Volgren and Marcopolo have old parallels.

“Volgren has a similar delight to Marcopolo. Both corporations started out as a circle of family businesses decades ago and became the most sensible in offering the most productive products and responses to operators, drivers and passengers,” Bellini said.

“Like Volgren, we work hard with several chassis manufacturers: Volvo, Scania, Mercedes, MAN, Iveco, BYD and [Brazilian manufacturer] Agrale”.

However, the differences are more attractive than the similarities.

The company recorded consolidated net sales of R$4,314.5 billion (A$1.16 billion) for 2019. It has the kind of monetary resources that an Australian automaker could probably never dream of, and invests heavily in studies and development. And not just in bus construction, he says.

Marcopolo’s reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic is the ultimate productive example, and indeed the most relevant without delay.

“Marcopolo is the first manufacturer of bus frames to launch biosecurity projects in Brazil. We believe we are dictating trends among consumers in the face of this ‘new normal’ lifestyle,” Bellini said.

In fact, Marcopolo Next, the company’s innovation department, has introduced a full diversity of safety products as a component of its BioSafe initiative. Among them are a soft UV-C sterilization solution, antimicrobial fabrics and drive force coverage kits, however, the most striking invention, and potentially the most valuable, is a disinfectant mist called FIP Onboard.

As noted earlier on the ABC www.busnews.com.au website, FIP means “fog in place” and the product works by releasing a cloud of nanoparticles, absolutely non-toxic to humans, into a closed vehicle, Marcopolo says. Disinfect the entire inside of the bus without leaving any moisture in a few minutes, adds.

According to the company, qualified tests through the University of Caxias do Sul in southern Brazil have demonstrated the effectiveness of the generation and will probably be applicable on buses around the world, but also – on trams and trains, and even in schools, hotels, purchase of groceries malls. Array restaurants and sports fields.

This is just one of many promising projects involving Marcopolo Next, the corporate confirms. However, the core domain of the larger company experience remains manufacturing. And in this context, it is now well established in Latin America and continues to get large orders from operators in the region, he says.

André Armaganijan, Director of International Affairs and Strategy at Marcopolo, said the company had completed an expedition to the Transantiago.

“It’s more than three hundred buses for the Chilean market,” Armaganijan said.

Transantiago is the built-in public transport formula, one of the continent’s most complicated, serving the metropolitan domain of Santiago, the capital of Chile. Marcopolo is the largest bus provider in this network.

Armaganijan explains that Chile is a market for many reasons, adding its leadership in taking into account the generation of zero emissions as a component of its fleet range.

“There is a developing call for zero-emission buses in many Latin American countries. Chile is leading the advent of electric buses. Government interest varies from country to country, however, it will continue to grow,” Armaganijan said.

“We are well placed to meet the demand of the all-electric bus market and adapt our product to other technologies such as hybrids, hydrogen-fueled mobile cars and opportunity-dependent cars,” he added.

Bellini says Africa is also a top market for businesses right now. In addition to having a facility in South Africa, Marcopolo invests heavily in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Ethiopia.

“Lately we are completing the production of 130 Marcopolo Torinos for Angola’s public transport system, all supplied with BioSafe technology.”

In many ways, Australia is the last piece of the Brazilian giant’s southern hemisphere puzzle. Bellini says it is a region for the company and that they are making a concerted effort to build a closer relationship between Volgren and its parent company.

“For Marcopolo, the Australian market is also very important and we must be identified as a high-end brand,” he said.

“Both corporations are constantly learning from each other. The Marcopolo Group has a lot to offer in terms of processes, products, components, innovation, wisdom and technology.

Thiago Deiro, a longtime Marcopolo executive, CEO of Volgren in 2019 and has led several Brazilian colleagues to positions of responsibility at the Australian company. Bellini says the appointments have helped deepen the link between Australia and South America.

“Talents from Brazil have created links between the headquarters of Marcopolo and Volgren. In the coming years, the team will begin loading the Marcopolo generation into the Australian market as it expands the success of Volgren’s exports,” Bellini said.

“Volgren has already controlled to enter export markets like Japan, and we can see products manufactured in Australia coming to Brazil, as well as organizational services in other parts of the world.”

Bellini says they will measure their good luck as the owner of the Australian manufacturer on how they balance Volgren’s existing culture with the advent of new concepts and new power measures from Brazil.

“When Thiago officially started in Volgren, he spoke about the sense of belonging of Volgren’s employees. He said the other people from Volgren, the business, their time at home. We need to maintain that culture. Other happy and interested people do a smart task and create wonderful products.

“The quality of Volgren’s products is on the side and we need to make sure Volgren’s products remain those of this region,” Bellini concluded.

The protection of workers and the best degrees of service for consumers has never been greater than now for Volgren.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions of the fourth stage of the Victoria State government, introduced in August 2020, have created complicated situations for the country’s largest bus frame manufacturer, he said.

Classified as an essential activity, Volgren continues to operate on its 3 sites on an ongoing basis, but remains alert to protection and discovers new tactics to respond to the pandemic, he explains.

Since early March, Volgren has implemented a number of corporate changes, adding the absence of face-to-face meetings on the site with corporate representatives and external suppliers, the team department and the creation of rotating lists for workplace staff, applying social distance measures of canteens to the board of directors and maintenance of corporate smart hygiene practices. Says.

Thiago Deiro, CEO of Volgren, said: “We have 4 priorities that advise our decisions in this age of uncertainty: ensuring the protection of our employees; Provide the highest point of service to our consumers and components. Be more agile and cutting edge and make our component to prevent you from spreading the virus.

“We are grateful that our production operations are classified as essential and remain open as critical suppliers, maintaining our daily operations.

“Our office, technical and visitor staff is fully available to our visitors, chassis partners and suppliers.”

In addition to introducing Marcopolo Dry Land Generation (FIP On Board) to the Australian market for passengers to travel safely during the pandemic, Volgren has also developed a contactless money payment formula to eliminate all contact between the driving force and the passenger and a diversity of transparent air conditioning. Output brackets: to accommodate a greater diversity of doors and air grille cleaning outlets Explain.

“The integration of biosecurity measures into public transport is a vital step in restoring passenger confidence and the willingness to maintain the protection of the traveling public.”

“Covid-19 has created demanding situations for many sectors. Public transport and student transport were affected.

“We believe that measures evolved under Marcopolo BioSafe and our own projects can play a role in helping the Australian bus industry recover financially by allowing travelers and schoolchildren to get back on the bus comfortably,” Thiago said.
