“Mrs. Ford’s ordinary tale is a lesson in this life’s beautiful and often ruthless unpredictable ability and our capacity for redemption. Her adventure reminds us that we don’t explain ourselves through our worst moments, but rather through our ability to reshape life’s inevitable pains. and struggle to find goal and salvation,” Dr. Biden said. “Heroism is not perfection,” Betty taught us. That’s resilience. But most of all, Betty gave us hope. I hope it will be a better day. I hope this will happen too. I hope that even in the depths of despair, human will is limitless. As many at the Betty Ford Center would say, “If Betty can do it, I can do it. “

“Mom would be touched and grateful beyond words for the ordinary tribute on her commemorative stamp. For mom, the stamp would be a poignant reminder of the joys of millions of breast cancer and substance use disorder survivors who have triumphed over their ailments and separately added to their legacy of candor,” said Mrs. Ford’s daughter, Susan Ford Bales, a trustee of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. who joined Dr. Biden to speak at the inauguration at the White House, along with U. S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy; and Hazelden Betty Ford, President and CEO of Joseph Lee, MD.

The Eisenhower and Betty Ford Center, co-founded through Ms. Ford in 1982, have been neighbors and collaborators for more than 4 decades.

“Betty Ford is appreciated around the world as someone who represents the strength of authenticity and hope and the truth of healing and recovery,” said Dr. Lee. “This lovely new seal not only honors his legacy, but sends a positive message to the country that we can overcome difficult and demanding situations separately and together in our families and communities. “Betty Ford has replaced the role of First Lady,” said Postmaster General DeJoy. “She used this role not only as a platform to constitute the country and move her husband, President Gerald Ford, forward, but she also used the role of First Lady to speak out unabashedly and honestly about the issues she cared about and the non-public issues she faced. “

Ford will join other First Ladies who have printed on U. S. stamps, adding Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Dolly Madison, Eleanor Roosevelt, Lady Bird Johnson and Nancy Reagan. President Gerald Ford earned his own stamp in 2007. The Postal Service has also issued stamps similar to those for prevention (in 1971 and 2020) and remedy (1981) of drug addiction, but they never cure. So while Ford’s legacy goes beyond its influential advocacy for recovery, many will celebrate its stamp as the nation’s first brand. “Seal of Recovery”. The date is also significant, as it is close to Mrs. Ford’s sobriety anniversary on April 7 and 8, as well as the 75th birthday of Hazelden’s first patient, Betty Ford in Minnesota (April 21, 1949).

“The spirit of Betty Ford lives on in the Betty Ford Center, the Hazelden Betty Ford Network, and in the lives of countless Americans and families affected by her advocacy,” said Tessa Voss, regional vice president and California regional administrator for Hazelden Betty Ford. Ford Center. ” Decades after Ms. Ford first publicly shared her experience with addiction and recovery, her story still opens doors for others to seek help, and this new seal will open up even more help. “
