Dubai and Riyadh: NEOM McLaren Formula E is relishing the opportunity to compete in this weekend’s ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Diriyah E-Prix races and is set to generate strong performances in its ‘home races’.
Saudi Arabia hosts the second and third rounds on Friday and Saturday evenings and for NEOM McLaren Formula E, the races are an opportunity to fly the national flag following the strategic partnership between McLaren and NEOM in 2022.
McLaren driver Jake Hughes is keen to get back to racing at Diriyah and says the team, which includes two-time Diriyah winner Sam Bird, is making progress on and off the track.
Speaking at a press conference in Diriyah, the British driver said: “I think all the drivers on the grid love coming to the circuit and none more so than me. It’s a driver’s circuit just because it’s very fast and it’s full of tracks, and it’s something I’ve got ahead of me, especially in Saudi Arabia, and I’m racing for a good result.
Team principal Ian James says the partnership with NEOM is for McLaren’s development. He said, “It is a privilege to have NEOM on board as a spouse since the inception of our business and in our transition. McLaren is not only a racing company, but also an engineering and generation organisation. I think this explanation bodes well, because NEOM is very forward-thinking and works well as a two-way relationship.
“The stability provided by the partnership with NEOM is certainly crucial. This shows that we have a solid foundation within the team. One of the things I find desirable about NEOM and McLaren is that they start from scratch and people’s fondness and enthusiasm for doing something new is whatever we have in common.
Rounds 2 and 3 take place on a street circuit surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the most scenic spots on the 16-race calendar, the night races of the Formula E season.
Looking ahead to the races, which will start at 8:00 p. m.
