A stunning Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster won the coveted “Best of Show” name at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, becoming the tenth Mercedes-Benz to win the prestigious award every year since 1950.
This 540 K Special Roadster was commissioned in May 1937 through Mohammed Zahir Shah, then King of Afghanistan. It was delivered in September and belonged to the king until he gave it to his son-in-law in the UK in 1950. It was then sold to an American Collector in 1953 and, to date, has undergone only five ownership changes. The current owner spent $9. 9 million on the car at an auction in Pebble Beach last year.
Since the current owner bought the car, it has fully recovered thanks to RM Auto Restoration in cooperation with the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. The car now features a full Mercedes-Benz Classic report that provides a chronology of the car’s history. while detailing each and every detail restored over the past year.
The current owner, Jim Patterson, owns a large number of vintage cars and won the Best of Show award at Pebble Beach in 2010 with his Villars Roadster Delage D8 S and in 2015 with his Isotta Fraschini Type 8A Worblaufen Cabriolet.
