There’s something about the subversive structure of the car that really sparks creativity. There are cars that have massive after-sales service for whatever goal you have in mind, and many other people who don’t have the budget or resources to fully customize them would be sensible about opting for those cars. But there are also other people like Mike Burroughs of Stanceworks who have a workshop, serious skills and the very expressed ambition to participate in the Global Time Attack with a Ferrari 308 swapped for a K24.
2023 is the year of the absurd structure of the Ferrari 308. While this year we cover an “outlawed” Ferrari 308, Burroughs’ 308 takes an absolutely different approach. Instead of being a dirty but cool revival of a discontinued 308, Burroughs took a relatively decent but unloved 1981 Ferrari 308 GTBi and turned it into a fire-breathing Honda K24 counterclockwise attack car.
Yes, K series switches have become the new LS switch, but not without reason. The original Ferrari V8 retired by Burroughs weighed 800 pounds and was fully equipped. The K24 built by 4Piston Racing is much lighter, even with a large turbocharger capable of 1,000 horsepower. That’s all to say that Burroughs took this beast around the world and competed in the World Time Attack in Australia, then returned the car to the United States for the Time Attack World Finals at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. This is where the car had an unsatisfactory end to the season.
It took two and a half years to completely build it and nothing was spared. Custom radiator duct paints, exhaust paints, and interior paints showcase the craftsmanship of the build, while the aerodynamics have been treated by Southern California parts manufacturer, RSFuture. The pendant is fully custom-designed and completely loose from sockets. Send Cut Send helped Burroughs make the most of the parts he couldn’t make in his private paint shop, and despite his relative inexperience with TIG welding, the car worked wonders.
Burroughs drove well, everyone consulted until the engine failed. For reference, the benchmark fastest lap time on Buttonwillow is less than two minutes. Burroughs only had one lap of 1:56, with a lot more to find. Fortunately, the engines are replaceable and the car will come back. For now, it’s a well-deserved break for the car.
