The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History will offer an on-site academy for local students

As academics prepare to take distance learning courses this fall, the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History offers a program in which academics will attend those online sessions.

The museum announced in a Facebook post on August 8 that it would offer an eight-week program called Museum Academy to help academics seek recommendations and face-to-face interactions in their school’s mandatory distance learning.

The one-day program will take place from Monday to Friday from Monday, August 17 at the museum. It will be available to students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Scott Simmonds, director of schooling and museum operations, said the museum had created the program as a “support center” for local academics and parents.

“The program is designed for our museum educators to help academics complete their online sessions and offer clinical and ancient activities in those sessions,” Simmonds said. “Our purpose is to create networks and provide social interactions for young people through secure social estrangement strategies.”

Simmonds said the museum planned to use the same security protocols it had in its summer camp sessions at the Museum Academy.

“There will be two academics at each of a six-foot table with a separator between them, and we’ll have educators watching each of their sessions,” Simmonds said. “The mask will be mandatory for all visitors and museum staff.”

Simmonds said that with the museum’s study rooms and giant convention halls, the academy can accommodate up to 30 academics in the room, divided by age.

The museum averaged about 50 young people each week in its summer program, he said.

“This program is a test for us, however, we know that many parents have to paint and don’t know what to do in those days, so we have stepped up to offer this program,” Simmonds said. “We will ensure that we maintain this program for as long as it is mandatory and will continue to monitor what schools in the region plan to do during this period.”

The Academy of Science and History of the Corpus Christi Museum at the Corpus Christi Museum will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday from August 17.

Registration starts at $225 according to children’s week for museum members and $250 according to children’s week for non-members.

It offers a $25 lunch option consistent with the child each week and includes a daily lunch and snack.
