The Chevrolet Camaro is dead again, for now

Production of the Chevrolet Camaro has officially ended, for now, ending the second act of General Motors’ pony car.

Chevrolet spokesman Trevor Thompkins showed Motor Authority that the last sixth-generation Camaro rolled off the production line on Dec. 14. Chevrolet hasn’t officially shown that the Camaro’s nameplate will be retired, but without an online successor, it’s taking a break.

It’s rarely the first time the Camaro has gone missing. GM halted production of the fourth-generation model (and its twin Pontiac Firebird) after 2002, after 35 years of uninterrupted production. But the old-fashioned trend that revitalized the Ford Mustang and encouraged a new version of the Dodge Challenger (which also ended production this month) convinced GM to launch a new fifth-generation Camaro for the 2010 style year.

The sixth-generation Camaro arrived for the 2016 style year with a sleeker shape and more nimble handling. It also brought a turbo-4 engine to the lineup (though it was discontinued for 2024) and introduced a 650-horsepower ZL1 style aimed at enthusiasts.

Chevrolet announced in March that the Camaro would be retired after the 2024 style year. To mark the end of production, the 2024 Camaro earned a collector’s edition package with exclusive styling features but no functionality enhancements. Its Panther Black Metallic Tintcoat outer end references the Panther. The codename used the progression of the original Camaro and is paired with satin black accent stripes and 20-inch black wheels.

Future Camaro incarnations will likely take on a very different form. Rumors circulating in 2021 pointed to an electric performance sedan. Other speculation points to an electric SUV, something that’s also been rumored as part of an expanded Corvette lineup. Whether it’s a sedan, a coupe, or SUV, an EV wearing the Camaro badge would be in line with GM’s previously stated “aspiration” to make its passenger car lineup all-electric by 2035.
