Buried in General Motors’ latest sustainability report, published Thursday (PDF), the automaker has published a wealth of data on its long-term electric vehicle portfolio. We knew the automaker’s purpose was to market 20 electric cars internationally until 2023, but for the first time we have U.S.-specific data.
A total of 12 new electric cars have been shown and will soon be held in all GM divisions: Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. We already knew some of them, but some were discussed publicly for the first time.
Let’s start with the classic divisions and move on to luxury brands.
Bowtie’s logo has 3 new electric cars on the way, according to GM. The first is the Bolt electric application vehicle that GM has discussed in the past. Expect it to look a lot like the Buick Velite 7 he recently revealed for China. We’ll see Bolt EUV’s debut next summer as a 2022 style and will be the first Cadillac outdoor vehicle to get the car manufacturer’s partially automated Super Cruise driving assistant for the road.
GM has not provided deadlines for the next two electric vehicles, however, we see them until 2023 to meet the competitive schedule of the car manufacturer. The most important news is an electric Chevrolet pickup truck with battery that will offer at least 400 miles of battery life. Details are rare, but GM said it would occupy the entire segment, so it is expected to be about the same length as a Silverado. Finally, an intermediate SUV will come from Chevy for ‘customers looking for an electric option in this segment’. That’s all GM had to say about this vehicle, however, it can be encouraged through the new Trailblazer.
This is new, but GM has also shown that a new Bolt EV is on its way and will also be introduced next year.
Two new electric-powered SUVs are on their way to Buick. One is a more classic cross-shaped vehicle to ‘maximize the interior area and cargo’, while the other style will be ‘expressive’. Buick has built some glorious concepts in recent years, so I hope we see something amazing.
Gm’s apparent VEHICLE for GMC is the next Hummer EV pickup truck, however, after many rumors, GM has also shown that we will see an electric Hummer SUV founded on the pickup truck. It deserves a lot of percentage with the van, so when we nevertheless see the van, we’ll probably also intelligently see the SUV that’s coming.
GM’s luxury department is expected to lead the vehicle’s electric vehicle attack, and a total of five electric cars will soon be available. We know two: the Lyriq electric SUV that will debut next month and celestiq’s flagship model. The latter is the sedan discussed in the platoon. In addition to those two models, Cadillac will get 3 additional electric SUVs.
The first will be a type of entry-level luxury model, similar to the area the XT4 fills today for Cadillac. Then comes a three-row “world-sized” SUV that focuses on the interior area, and finally, we’ll see a full-size electric SUV encouraged through Escalade. We’ve heard a lot of rumors about an upcoming Electric Escalade, but it’s unclear whether it will be an extension of the existing SUV or a new logo model.
Expect all of these new models (save for the Bolt EV and EUV) to ride on GM’s new BEV3 platform, which supports the automaker’s Ultium battery technology. The tech is meant to help better hunt Tesla , with ranges exceeding 400 miles on a single charge and ultrafast charging at rates up to 350 kilowatts.
But the automaker says it’s further away. Engineers are already working on the generation to upgrade Ultium with low cobalt alternatives, to be more planet-friendly and budget-friendly. Instead, they can hold the best grades of nickel and, with other advances, we can see GM’s electric cars that offer a diversity of 500 to six hundred miles.
GM has long said that it believes in an electric future, but clearly, the automaker is its effective where it is.
