There has been much talk about the long-term return of Fiat’s-owned Alfa Romeo in North America, an occasion that all enthusiasts of imported feature cars are waiting for it to happen.
While the manufacturer’s sports sedans and sedans are superbly modern and dynamic, the cars that will once put Alpha back on everyone’s radar will be their flagship coupe and Spyder convertible. Based on the Italdesign Brera concept (see Alfa Romeo Brera Special in the concept car segment of this website), an award-winning design by Giorgetto Giugiaro, an uncompromising new roof will debut the moment the logo makes the adventure across the Atlantic, around 2006 or 2007.
The Brera uses the foundations of Maserati, adding its 4.2L V8, but the innards of the production car will be made of more affordable components. This has Brera fans, and there are many, involved in Alpha’s finished product. Reducing costs, certification needs and the use of Alpha-based architecture can simply replace the shape of the sexy model, reducing its appeal. Alfa Romeo officials only say that each and every precaution is taken in the proportions of the original concept.
Most of Alfisti will not worry about the exclusion of Lamborghini Bat-style scissor doors from Brera, as more traditional carriers will bring value closer to reality. Conventional doors will also open the windows completely, a feature that we’ve all become accustomed to.
