The $136,000 Maserati Levante GTS is a drool-worthy preview of what Ferrari’s SUV could be like

A leading company aimed at virtual transformation.

Suppose you searched for a Ferrari, but you came from a region where no one learns the traditions of Maranello sports cars. An SUV is just your style, you decide. So you spend a day in your friendly community of upright horse racers and ask if you can see some utes.

The rider thanks him for his interest and hands the business card of a colleague representing Maserati, who since 2016 sells the Ferrari from SUVS, to the original Maranello engine.

The question, of course, is why would anyone need the SUV Ferrari? Well, this is a factor provisionally treated through Maserati (we may not live in the adjacent consultation of why someone would need the Maserati SUV). But starting in 2022, Ferrari promised a “FUV” that would be called Purosangue, its own high-level heresy edition.

Are you interested in what this vehicle would look like and you don’t need to wait? Look no further than the Maserati Levante GTS, which I had the opportunity to enjoy for a week. Here’s how it went:

My tester did not come with fuel economy specifications, however, with this engine, I would expect less than 20 mpg combined, and that’s how my Levante followed the week I drove it in a mix of city/road conditions.

The Maserati Levante GTS is a good look, however, once the look is over, you can start driving. And that’s where the SUV gives a convincing explanation of why write the big check.

The V8 comes to life and continues to roar. The soundtrack is spectacular. But it’s not just noise. The race at 60 km/h is, according to Maserati, a 4-second phenomenon, however, I think it came here a little further down. And the GTS plays exceptionally well in the corners. The most productive component of this is to dive into a curve, then pass out, feel the power flowing in the car, on the wheels, on the tires and then on the sidewalk while the Levante hangs.

Yes, other high-performance SUVs can do this. But the Levante GTS does so with an escape note that is frankly mythological, while pampering you on Italian-style acres. He never gets old.

You almost think Ferrari can manufacture and sell one of those things in a few years. You can almost also not dive into the curves and turn off at will if you have a weekend of hidden supplies in the cellar, at least not without making a mess.

The word that comes to the brain when I enjoy a Maserati is “magic.” These machines send me, in a way that the ambitious Porsches, Mercedes and BMW don’t. Don’t remove any of those German engineering SUV masterpieces. They can be so good, too.

But the Maseratis are done. So, if in this market and needs to stand out, more than a little, the Levante GTS can be its utility.
