For many years, Tesla has been the champion of electric car diversity. The Model S was at the top of the charts until the Mercedes-Benz EQS challenged it, and even then, for more money and less performance. But now there’s a new competitor, and it’s not the logo you might expect. It’s the venerable French automaker Peugeot. The recently introduced Peugeot E-3008 offers a WLTP range of 435 miles, while the new Tesla Model S only achieves 405 miles, and the Project Highland Tesla Model 3 will offer 420 miles.
The new Peugeot E-3008 was unveiled on Tuesday with an interior presentation in Sochaux, France, highlighting the importance that Stellantis attaches to this vehicle. In fact, it is the company’s first product of the new electric era. It is based on the new STLA Medium platform. At launch, there will be three possible transmission options for the E-3008. There is a front-wheel drive edition with a 210 kW (210 hp) motor and a 73 kWh battery (net), a Dual Motor all-wheel drive edition with the same battery but 240 kW (320 hp) and the occasional edition with long-range front-wheel drive. with a 170 kW (230 hp) motor and a 98 kWh battery (net).
While the 73 kWh vehicles offer a WLTP long range of 326 miles (a big improvement over previous Stellantis EVs), the 98 kWh long range option is the most significant improvement. This edition is the one that offers 435 miles of WLTP diversity, which will be the highest productivity in its class. The Peugeot E-3008 may not be a particularly fast vehicle by EV standards, with even the dual-motor version taking 6. 4 seconds to reach 62 mph and the other two coming in closer to nine seconds. . These are modest figures considering that the bargain-priced MG4 XPOWER takes just 3. 8 seconds.
The 21in wraparound Panoramic i-Cockpit is a significant step forward for Stellantis dashboard and infotainment, but this is a mid-range brand rather than premium. The interior is comfortable and there is a decent amount of cargo space in the rear (520 liters with the rear seats up and 1,482 liters with them down). Rear passengers have good headroom and legroom, too. This is an affordable, well-constructed car for families, not an ostentatious luxury vehicle.
That is why the 435 miles of range are significant. We have come to expect this kind of figure from cars costing close to £100,000 ($124,000) or more. Although the company didn’t divulge any definite details about how much the E-3008 would cost, one Stellantis representative implied to me that the 98kWh version should be available for around £45,000 ($56,000). The Tesla Model 3 Long Range is considerably more expensive in the UK, and the Y even more.
There will be more Peugeots based on the STLA Medium platform along with the Small and Large variants announced by Stellantis in 2021 as well. Stellantis could have achieved its enormous diversity through a massive battery (that 98 kWh figure is netArray, so cells have even more raw energy). capacity), however, it is a defining moment in the progression of the electric vehicle market when a medium diversity logo offers 435 miles of diversity. diversity. This means it won’t be long before more modestly priced and diverse EVs achieve price parity with their internal combustion engine (ICE) competitors.
Apparently, the STLA Medium platform can still accommodate ICE. But unlike the previous E-CMP platform, STLA Medium was designed for electric vehicles first and will later be adapted for ICE. The E-CMP is the opposite, making it a compromise for electric cars. Despite Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares’ ambivalent comments about electric vehicles, the company is prioritizing electrification, knowing that there are still a few years left in the ICE market to capitalize on it.

Stellantis has also been quite clever when it comes to integrating the larger 98 kWh battery. Although there is no dual-motor E-3008 lately, the extra battery capacity does not take up the rear motor area. Instead, Stellantis uses a deeper package in its skateboard design (where the battery sits in the middle between the front and rear wheels across the entire width of the vehicle). This reduces ground clearance by about 15mm, but the interior area is still exactly the same as the 73kWh front-wheel-drive car.
Stellantis has made some compromises with the Peugeot E-3008. The platform is still based on 400V rather than 800V technology, to cut costs. But it still supports DC charging up to 160kW, so even the 98kWh battery will take around 30 minutes to go from 20% to 80%. There is a Vehicle to Load (V2L) capability enabling the E-3008 to power external devices up to 3kW at 16A. So you’ll be able to run the pump for a bouncy castle or supply an al fresco home cinema projector when camping.

To Americans, the E-3008 may seem unimportant, since Peugeot has not sold cars in the United States for more than 30 years. But there are two things to consider. First of all, Peugeot is part of Stellantis, which owns several iconic American logos, including Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and RAM. And while Peugeot’s previous plans to return to the US market as a logo have fallen through, other European logos owned by Stellantis, including Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Maserati, are available. The STLA Medium platform will be available for most of these logos, and Stellantis has 22 factories in the United States (although two are currently inactive), six in Canada, and seven in Mexico. In other words, it will most likely also make affordable long-range STLA Medium electric vehicles for the North American market.
While the Peugeot E-3008 may not be a halo car that replaces the EV market overnight, it’s a major milestone. The Peugeot E-3008 will go on sale in February 2024, which means that the diversity that will be in the mid-market will be at least 435 miles from next year. One of the common criticisms from EV detractors is that EVs don’t make enough progress compared to ICEs. But the 435-mile Peugeot E-3008 shows that it will soon be that way.
