Tesla withdrew problems in more than 200,000 vehicles for autonomous computer failure

Tesla has officially issued a withdrawal of more than 200,000 cars in the United States in relation to the internal autonomous PC of the vehicle’s short circuit and to work.

This is an issue that Electrek has been reporting on for a month.

In December, Electk published an exclusive report on the fact that Tesla has a primary challenge with a new edition of its “full autonomous computer”, AI4. 1, which fails due to a short circuit and Tesla will have to update the computer

We discover examples of those that occur in July. The challenge can start quickly, a few kilometers in a new logo car or after a few of a few thousand kilometers.

When the computer fails, many vehicle features stop working, like active safety features, auto wipers, auto high beams, cameras, and even GPS, navigation, and range estimations.

The Tesla solution to absolutely update the computer, but the resources have also discussed a transient software solution to allow some of the functionalities in the meantime.

We follow a previous report this week that highlighted how it leaves consumers in a difficult scenario without the capacity and with a faster battery degradation because the PC seems stuck in an automatic mode that drains five kWh consistent with Dayarray

In the last report, we also discuss that Tesla has not yet made a retirement related to this factor despite doing so, since those cars have not fulfilled NHTSA without rear view cameras.

Today, Tesla officially issued a retirement on the matter. For the first time, we have a greater concept of the affected population, than 239,382 vehicles:

The topics population includes a safe-style year (MY) 2024-2025 Model 3, my style and 2023-2025, my 2024-2025 style and my style styles x 2023-2025 that were supplied with safe automotive computers and exploiting a Edition software that is yielded before 2024. 44. 25. 3 or 2024. 45. 25. 6

In the recall notice, Tesla describes the non-compliance:

In a small percentage of assigned cars, the vehicle source, an existing inverted, can cause short-circuit failure in the car’s PC card, resulting in the loss of reversing camera capacity, which does not respect the FMVS 111, S5. 5 and S6. 2

Again, the challenge is much bigger than that, as the entire PC fails, however, the automaker only mentions the camera in the background, as that’s the component that makes it a security threat and a non-conforming one.

These things take place when new portions are used, I understand it. But Tesla wants to be more transparent about the problem, and also publicly leaves with a plan to update them as temporarily possible. It is a bad business to take care of that way.

Tesla says it saw the top PC failure rate on November 21, 2024. He investigates and after about a month, he thinks he has a concept of the cause, which would be several points that run together:

This sequence of specific software and hardware configurations, coupled with colder temperatures, could increase reverse current, which could short the primary and/or secondary power components.

As of December 30, 2024, Tesla has known 887 warranty claims similar to this issue.

In the recall segment, Tesla explains that it will push the software solution to the total population, however, it will also continue to update the PC for cars that know the short circuit:

At a time after December 18, 2024, at no charge to customers, assigned cars began to get a live software update (OTA) that modifies the vehicle switching series to save you a short-circit failure condition at number one and/or/or secondary condition for force component. No further action is mandatory for owners of affected cars that are supplied with the 2024. 44. 25. 3, 2024. 45. 25. 6 or upcoming release if an affected vehicle has not experienced the fault condition or voltage that may cause the short circuit failure condition. Tesla actively runs to identify assigned cars, if required, which can lead to the short-circuit fault condition. If an affected vehicle has become aware of the fault condition or a fault restriction that may lead to the short-circuit fault condition prior to installing software edition 2024. 44. 25. 3, 2024. 45. 25. 6 or a later edition, Tesla will update the car PC PC AT AT There is no charge to the customer.

We have indicated that some consumers who faced this challenge were to wait until months to replace the computer.
