Tesla will build its new Gigafactory near Austin, Texas, announced Wednesday CEO Elon Musk’s call for profit.
It occupies about 2,000 acres and will be about 15 minutes from downtown Austin, Musk said. He said the plant would be an “ecological paradise” and would be open to the public.
“Let’s turn it into a beautiful factory; it’s right on the Colorado River. So we’re going to have to take a walk above you, a hike, a motorcycle trail. Ecological paradise,” Musk said.
It will be used to build the company’s Cybertruck, its Semi and Model 3 and Model Y for the eastern part of North America, Musk said.
Musk also added that Tesla would continue to grow in California, where it will build the Tesla Model S and Model X for deliveries and the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y for North America.
Travis County, where the new automotive plant will be located, voted earlier this month to provide Tesla with a tax-exempt value of at least $14.7 million to build the plant and create jobs in the area. Tesla now employs another 10,000 people at its only U.S. auto plant. En Fremont, California.
“Texas is the most productive in the country and we have built an economic environment that allows corporations like Tesla to innovate and succeed,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said after the announcement.
“Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas will be the most powerful Texas economy in the country and create thousands of jobs for hard-working Texas. I take a look at the super benefits that Tesla’s investment will bring to central Texas and the state at large.”
