Tesla is retiring the Cybertruck again, this time because it can fly

By Peter Valdés-Dapena, CNN

Tesla has issued two Cybertruck recalls — the third and fourth — since the model expired last year.

The most recent recall, which affects nearly all of the roughly 12,000 trucks on the road so far, concerns the truck’s massive windshield wipers and a piece of plastic trim along the edge of the truck’s bed.

A piece of black plastic trim that runs along the edge of the truck’s sloping wall can come off and off the vehicle while driving.

“If the device detaches from the vehicle while driving, it can create a road hazard for following motorists and increase their threat of injury or collision,” according to documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.

The problem arose when the component was missing from a Cybertruck that had been sent to a delivery center on an auto transport truck, according to NHTSA documents. A Tesla investigation found that the component had not been installed correctly. Further investigation revealed more times where decorative parts became loose due to installation. Some of those boxes were Cybertrucks that were delivered to customers.

Cybertruck owners will be asked to take their trucks to a Tesla service center where the trim component will be replaced or properly installed with a “grip promoter” and pressure-sensitive tape. Tesla will begin notifying owners about the recall in mid-August.

Trucks are also being recalled due to a separate factor with the electric motor powering the truck’s massive windshield wipers. Some motors failed tests in a way that allowed existing superior electricity to flow through the motor, causing it to fail.

Tesla has already recalled the Cybertruck for other reasons. In April, the trucks were recalled because the accelerator pedal was in danger of getting stuck. In January, Tesla factored in a software recall for 2. 2 million vehicles, adding Cybertrucks, because of lettering on warning lights. The devices were too small to be readable without problems. This factor was solved through an over-the-air software update.
