California’s most sensible election official is investigating reports that the state’s Republican Party has set up unauthorized polling stations posing as “officials” in several primary counties, an illegal practice that can trick the electorate into resorting to its ballot boxes in unsafe places.
“Making pictures of unofficial polling stations, especially those that are mistakenly presented as official polling stations, is not only misleading to voters, it’s a violation of state law,” California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in reaction to reports of unauthorized voting stations in Fresno, Los Angeles, and Orange counties.
As reported through the Orange County Local Registry on Sunday night, “In a photo posted on social media last week, a young man dressed in a mask with the call of Orange County Congressional candidate Michelle Steel holds a mail poll and a thumbs up next to a box the length of a folder titled “Official Ballot Urn””.
“The message, from Jordan Tygh, a regional box office director for the California Republican Party, encouraged others to send him a message informing him of ‘practical places’ to cast their own votes,” the registry reported.
This is just one of many examples of potentially illegal election activity through Republican officials that have been reported in recent days. On Saturday night, he pointed to the sign, there were reports of a “metal box in front of Freedom’s Way Baptist Church in Castaic, with a sign matching that of the Orange County box. “
“The church posted on social media that the box” approved and brought through the Republican Party,” the sign reported. “The message said that church officials did not have a key to the polling place and that GOP officials were collecting the ballot boxes. . . . On its website, the Fresno County Republican Party also shared a list of “safe” survey collection locations. None of them is an official county depot, with the local GOP board with its own headquarters, several gun outlets and other local businesses in place. “
Under California state law, only county election officials can set up polling stations safely enough.
Orange County voter registrar Neal Kelley told the record that many others had caught his attention on the potentially illegal ballot box promoted through Tygh of the California Republican Party.
“What we’ve done is we start investigating it, notifying the state, and the secretary of state issued rules this afternoon that it’s illegal and that you can’t do it,” Kelley said. “It would be as if you were installing a mailbox in the corner: the postal workplace is the one that installs the mailboxes. “

Slate staff Mark Joseph Stern called the record reports incredibly alarming and said they advised “atrocious criminal behavior through California Republican agents. “
“California Republicans would create fake deposit boxes and inspire the electorate to cast their votes there,” Stern wrote. “Apparently, they’re looking for genuine voter fraud by committing genuine voter fraud. “
