Telfair County Sheriff Announces Housing for Migrant Workers at Former Workmore School Site

WORKMORE, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) — Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson responded Monday to what he called “numerous calls” he earned about ongoing paintings at the site of the former Workmore School at U. S. 319/U. S. 441/SR 31.

According to a sheriff’s Facebook post, the assets acquired through attorney Victor Peña and his father, who are preparing to renovate the facility to accommodate migrant farmworkers in transit.

According to Davidson, Victor Peña has outlined plans to welcome up to 250 Mexican employees whose work “will come first with the blueberry and pea harvest in Coffee and Johnson counties. “The staff, who Davidson said will have transitory H2A visas, are expected to be in the domain from April to October.

“After the construction season, the assets will be vacated at least initially,” Davidson wrote. “Future progression may come with a place to eat and a hotel open to the public. “

Davidson says staff transportation to and from their workplaces will be provided.

“He (Peña) doesn’t need to raise fears that staff will eliminate local jobs,” Davidson wrote. “He (Peña) needs to help the network and attract more businesses to our area. “

Davidson says local farmers who need help with harvesting contact Peña directly at (863) 528-5004.
