The ASEAN Football Federation has announced the postponement of the 2020 Suzuki AFF Cup until 2021 due to cases of coronavirus in the region and around the world.
The Suzuki AFF Cup plans to take a position from 23 November to 31 December before the postponement resolution adopted by the organizing committee of the race.
“Since the inception of COVID-19, the AFF has strictly followed world health organization (WHO) rules, ministries of health, government agencies, FIFA and AFC,” said AFF President Khiev Sameth.
“As you know, this pandemic continues to pose enormous economic, social and aptitude challenges. The AFF’s most sensible priority remains the fitness and protection of our circle of football family members and mitigating the effect of this pandemic.
“With the threat of COVID-19 spread still high, the AFF is in a scenario where we continue safely with the Suzuki AFF 2020 Cup,” Sameth said.
The AFF reportedly planned to hold the matches on a singles site instead of a round-trip format due to COVID-19, but the federation put the plan aside.
“While this is an unprecedented time for the world, adding our circle of family and football communities, we are confident that we will achieve this with all our stakeholders, adding to our fans, member associations, players, coaches, officers, media and partners. and we want to thank them for being united with us in the fight opposite COVID-19,” Sameth said.
The Philippine Azkals reached the semi-finals in 2018, eventual champion Vietnam, 4-2, overall.
