The municipal government has officially submitted proposals for new amenities that can accommodate up to 520 cars near the site.

But the formula has generated complaints about considerations about the loss of green area and there will be enough drivers to fill it.

Dominic McDonough, a member of the conservative opposition to Sunderland City Council, said: “Local citizens are very involved with those plans, as they will destroy a well-used green domain in our community.

“This motor park is not mandatory and, at a time when the Council says it is focusing on reducing car carbon emissions, we deserve to be looking for public transport and bike links, rather than razing green spaces to accommodate cars.”

He added: “Once we lose our spaces, they disappear forever.

“We are united in our confidence that this plan is false, short-sighted and environmental vandalism.”

If approved, the plans would allow the structure of a motor park on and between Silksworth Road and B1286 City Way.

Access to it would be from City Way.

Of the 520 seats, 21 would be disabled-only bays and 15 would be reserved for vehicles.

In recent years, families living near the main employment park have complained about employee parking in residential areas.

But Cllr McDonough predicted that the number of other people stationed in Doxford will be “significantly” minimized due to the accumulation in the number of other people fleeing the house as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

A spokesman for Sunderland City Council said: “There have been parking lots around Doxford International Business Park for several years.

“As with all applications, this proposal will be based on its merits and will respect the policies of national and local plans.

“A public consultation is underway and all comments won will be taken into account from the decision-making process.

“The application will be considered by a Planning Committee in due course.”

A resolution on the plans is in mid-October.
