Fiat Chrysler Automobiles voluntarily recalls some examples of its Ram 1500 2014-2018 full-size pickup truck and its 2014-2016 Grand Cherokee Jeep suV due to a potential engine stagnation problem. The recall, which affects 58,016 trucks and SUVs equipped with the company’s 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engines, reaches a crankshaft position sensor.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the EcoDiesel crankshaft position sensor phonic wheel designed via VM Motori, called the relocation ring, may be unpolished. This is bad news because the component is helping to synchronize the engine fuel injector pulses and camshaft stop, which are continuously optimized for maximum efficiency. Removing these curtains may cause the engine to drown, causing a risk of protection.
THE solution of FCA to the challenge is not to update the pitch wheel of the crankshaft position sensor, which can be difficult to access. Instead, the automaker is asking qualified Ram and Jeep technicians to update the EcoDiesel powertrain control module, forcing the powertrain to “maintain vehicle propulsion by reading the camshaft position signal in case the vilebrequin position signal is lost.”
It is not clear without delay whether this loose firmware solution will interfere with the engine’s ability to trip over errors (another vital service such as the crankshaft position sensor) or in a different way adjust engine performance.
No injuries or injuries from this possible defect are detailed in NHTSA’s official recall announcement.
Affected Ram and Jeep homeowners will be notified through the automaker, and the withdrawal crusade will begin on October 2.
