Subaru BRZ orders end in Japan as next-generation car approaches

We’re approaching the next generation car, but man, the existing car is good.

Since the BRZ’s cousin, the Toyota 86, leaves the same factory in Japan, we checked with Toyota to see if the automaker might be offering more details. However, a spokesman has just told Roadshow that “the plan is for 2020 production to continue into the fall” and declined to comment further. It is known whether Toyota is still receiving orders for the 86, or if the sports cars at dealerships are the latest in this generation.

Therefore, we can only make informed assumptions about the reasons for closing the order books. However, this probably means that the BRZs found in dealers are some of the definitive production sets. If you need a new brZ from the existing generation, it will probably go there.

As for the next BRZ duo and the 86th of the new generation, they’re definitely coming. After years of speculation, Toyota and Subaru demonstrated last September that we would see the return of sports cars, but they did not provide much detail. Meanwhile, two vital rumours have emerged. The first is that any of the cars will remain on their platform based on the impreza modified for rear propulsion. The timing is an imaginable move towards Toyota’s TNGA platform, which is also RWD compliant. We also heard that the next sports cars could simply abandon their four-litre, 2.0-litre boxer engines for a 2.4-litre engine. It is not known whether the cars will still be turbocharged, but even if they do, they will probably remain excellent fellow driving.
