I’m a big fan of Subaru. Yes, I drive my Subaru Crosstrek to REI with my Patagonia jacket. I’m one of those people. However, I was a bit annoyed that the company was delaying its decision on Tesla’s NACS connector, especially since most of the auto industry has done so. Thankfully, that wait is now over.
In a statement, Subaru is the latest automaker to announce that it will adopt Tesla’s charging connector in its long-lasting electric vehicles starting in 2025. In addition, the company will open up its existing and future EV models to Tesla’s Supercharger network by using an adapter as well.
This means that regardless of whether your Subaru EV is CCS or NACS-enabled, you’ll be able to qualify at more than 15,000 Tesla Superrater stations across North America, either through direct integration or through the use of a CCS-to-NACS adapter, which the company offers. It says it will supply its consumers from 2025.
Interestingly, Subaru claims that from 2025, the NACS connector will be provided in “some” EVs, indicating that it may still release some models with the CCS port until it does away with it entirely. “50% of total global sales will be BEVs by 2030” as part of its efforts to meet its carbon neutrality goals.
To give consumers access to Tesla’s extensive charging network, Subaru will adopt NACS ports on Subaru BEVs launching in North America starting in 2025 and will continue to advance NACS adoption for its upcoming BEVs to be introduced thereafter.
Subaru is the latest EV manufacturer to announce the adoption of NACS. In recent months, Mercedes, Rivian and GM have also announced agreements with Tesla to adopt the NACS charging connector and access the Supercharger network over the next few years. Not only are corporations making plans for the NACS charger, but all of them will also have access to the extensive Supercharger network.
Right now, the electric vehicle introduced through Subaru is the Solterra. Personally, I’m looking forward to the electric Outback. In my opinion, it’s the vehicle that can compete with the highly anticipated Rivian R2. Come on Subaru, let’s compete in the field of adventure electric vehicles!
