StarCom Racing announced on Thursday, February 1, that it is returning to the track after more than two years of absence, but in another discipline. They will return to the track as a team participating in the Michelin Pilot Challenge, which begins at Sebring in March.
As in the days of the NASCAR Cup Series, the team will continue to use the number 00. StarCom Fiber, the telecommunications installation company based in Millburn, New Jersey, will return as a presenting sponsor.
In its announcement, StarCom Racing will partner with Nitro Motorsports to drive a Hyundai Elantra N TCR in the TCR class. Nitro Motorsports, owned by Nick Tucker, a relative of Derrike’s cousin Ernie Cope, who once raced in NASCAR Craftsman. Truck Series, has mainly featured Trans-Am series cars presented through Pirelli’s TA2 class.
After StarCom Racing’s participation in the NASCAR Cup Series ended, Cope presented his assistance to Nitro Motorsports on stage. At the time, they were lining up signups for Brent Crews and (part-time) Corey Heim. With the Crews behind the wheel, Nitro Motorsports has been very successful, with the teenage Crews winning 3 races and finishing third in points.
Cope was given the wheel of an MT-class Chevrolet Camaro and raced himself at Mid-Ohio and VIR. His most productive finish was 16th at Mid-Ohio.
StarCom Racing will be the eighth car on the grid with the Hyundai Elantra N TCR. They sign up for Bryan Herta Autosport’s four full-time teams, Victor Gonzalez Racing Team’s (VGRT) two full-time teams, and Deily Motorsports’ team.
The team did not announce drivers for the effort in their press release. They will be announced at a later date.
