NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Stan Collymore believes Douglas Luiz will leave Aston Villa in the summer move window and believes he would be the best match for Arsenal.
The 25-year-old Brazilian foreign midfielder has scored six goals and four assists in 22 Premier League appearances for Unai Emery’s side this season.
Luiz left Manchester City to join Villa four-and-a-half years ago and has a contract that ultimately runs until 2026.
Arsenal have been linked with the signing of the Villa star over the past 18 months, and in that time their inventory has only grown.
“I think Douglas is a player who could end up leaving Villa,” Collymore told Genting Casino.
“I know he’s been linked with a move to Arsenal in the last few transfer windows, and I think it would be better if he had compatibility with them.
“He can hold the ball very well. He’s calm, doesn’t rush things and has skill with the ball. I can see him fitting in perfectly in midfield alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
“He would be the best player for Arsenal. It remains to be seen if Arsenal will take his place again. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened, and I wouldn’t blame him because he’s been brilliant for Villa.
“As long as the club had someone waiting in the wings and willing to fill the void if a player like Douglas Luiz were to leave, and Villa received the payment required by him, then he would have no challenge with [the move].
“I’ve been critical of him in the past. I didn’t think he had the ability to play as a midfielder, but in the formula that Unai plays, where he plays a little further forward, his composure on the ball is very good. He’s a player who doesn’t get angry.
